MARY K. SHAW

As an artist who is drawn to collage, I am most interested in making art that communicates in layers. Both layers of material and layers of meaning. I primarily use painted papers that I have generated with the printmaking technique known as gelatin (gel) printing.

With gel printing, I am able to make papers that contain patterns, colors, and shapes unique to my hand and my spontaneous, energetic work style. Sources of collage material to print on include old books, dictionary pages, sheet music, personal journals, and other ephemera.

The November show at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery is entitled “Keep the Light On”, and is inspired by the St. Augustine lighthouse. As an iconic landmark, it has a meaning beyond the functional purpose of guiding mariners. It is also a symbol of community pride, a historical marker of times past, a beacon to lost travelers, and a repository of personal memories for countless visitors and residents.

The show title, “Keep the Light On” also refers to the human desire to seek encouragement in dark times. As author Clarissa Pinkola Estes says “struggling souls catch light from other souls”.

My job as an artist is to make sparks!

Additionally, Mary will be hosting another of her gelatin plate printing demonstrations at the Butterfield Gallery on Sunday, November 16th. from 2 - 4pm.

Opening: First Friday Artwalk   -   November 7th.,  5:00 - 9:00 pm

See you at the Garage!

About Butterfield Garage Art Gallery

Established in February 1999, Butterfield Garage Art Gallery is the brainchild of artist Jan Miller. Her vision was to create an artist-run gallery for professional artists that would encourage creative experimentation. Miller brought with her the experience of over 40 years as a successful professional artist. Having been a former member of ARC Cooperative in Chicago, Jan wanted to create a similar collective here in her new home. Her plan was to bring together the best artists in the area, who would share expenses, management, and operation of the gallery. The gallery opened its doors in February 1999.

For 25 years now, the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery has provided its artists with the chance to grow and take advantage of opportunities that may come their way through exposure in a professional gallery. And we continue to this day, true to the gallery’s original mission: to be a leader in the presentation of traditional and contemporary visual arts in Northeast Florida, and to encourage the experience of direct accessibility and dialogue between artists and their customers.

Stop in and see what's new and don't forget to pick up a Shuttle Sticker for complimentary shuttle service to St. Augustine galleries between 6-9 pm on the night of the Gallery Walk.
