About The Artist

Jim Rivers is the featured artist at Butterfield Garage for the month of March. Stop in at 6pm on Friday, March 4th, for his Artist Talk and experience the unbridled creativity of Jim and his often curious, always charming pieces of furniture first hand.

Jim has been practicing woodcraft since he was a child. He began helping his woodcarver uncle search the forests for just the right piece of wood, a practice that has become an important part of his life ever since. Over a lifetime, Jim has developed an eye for seeing potential in unusual pieces of wood. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to walk through the countryside and find a piece of the Almighty’s creation that I can take home, cut and polish, and turn into something that people will like.” His impressive wood collection includes, cedar, sweet-gum, oak and pine.

Lately, Jim has been focusing on sculptures. “A lot of times, I’ll bring a piece of wood home, and I know there is something in there, but I can’t quite see it. He studies a piece of wood to work out what’s already in there. He often discovers mythical creatures, and then shapes the sculpture to bring out those elements.

What an untrained eye might see as an imperfection, Jim sees as an opportunity. It's a wonder to watch him work. Crude logs are sawed, shaped and sanded, coaxed by his touch and sense of the wood’s potential. Edges are not precise. Surprises are embraced. The final finished piece is a work of art, no two pieces are alike. Jim works in his wood shop every day, and is continually collecting new wood and experimenting with new techniques.

Butterfield has been graced with his mirrors, tables and benches for years, and they have become enthusiastically collected.

Butterfield Garage will be freshly stocked with new pieces, placed throughout the gallery during the month of March.

Butterfield Garage Earth Exhibition
Butterfield Garage Art Gallery invites YOU to join us in celebrating Earth Day 2022 by creating and exibiting artworks celebrating the beauty of our planet and protecting its’ environment during our “Celebrating EARTH” invitational exhibition.

What do you love about our planet? Is it the beauty and majesty of nature... her landscapes or seas?
A favorite flower, animal or the weather? Maybe it’s the people who inhabit it or your “special place.”
Or perhaps it’s your concern about its’ fragile environment and how we need to protect it.
Be creative as you like in your interpretation.

Anyone (any age, or background) can participate. We’ll supply the canvas. Draw it, paint it, collage it, be creative!
Canvases and entry forms can be picked up at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery.

Entry fee of $10 per entry includes an 8”x 8” canvas.
Works created with materials other than the canvas supplied must conform to the 8”x 8” dimensions.
